- The photo-art classes I take have us use 35mm cameras. The assignments are graded 50% on creativity and 50% on technical expertise. As your abilities with the medium increase, your assignments will become more challenging. It is the goal of the instructor to have your so at ease with exposure, developing and printing, you will be able to visualize the print as you press the shutter ... and know you will be able to execute the finished piece. I would talk to your instructor and get some suggestions from him. He/she may know of a good used camera you can start with until you have enough experience to know what kind of camera you will eventually use to create your art. On the whole, Nikon and Canon 35mm cameras are the most available as used cameras and are the ones that the pros use ... for good reason. They last and last and last. I hope this gives you a good start. BTW I use a Nikon F4, 4x5 view camera and a Nikon D200 for digital work.
