How do artistic people make a good living?

I'm in high school, and I'm starting to think about what I want to do when I finally get out. I'm good at artistic stuff like art, music, writing (specifically photography, piano, singing etc) and I know it's difficult to make a living in something like that. I need some suggestions.

  1. Waiting tables or temping while persuing your dream....you can also become a liscensed masseuse....many other performers need that service and you can really make some good money.
  2. free lance web designer-charge 10k per site
  3. You sound like I was back then! Although I couldn't say I had specific talents, I was just really interested in the arts in general. My parents were hard on me about following this dream, my dad kept saying Id never have any money if I did. As much I resented that he didnt seem to care about me following my dreams, I decided there were 2 smarter options. Either find a career that has an artistic side to it yet is still profitable (I am now a web developer, which was an excellent choice for me) or develop a career that will make money to live off, then pursue art as a hobby and if you find you can make money from it, THEN quit your day job. Unfortunately there are a LOT of talented full time artists out there who have no money. But if you can combine your artistic talents with good business sense, you could just make it.
  4. go to a school that is focused on your intrests. like NYU or an art school. you want to go somwhere that offers you alot to persue,, youll figure out what to do with the rest of your life in college, dont worry about it now.
  5. lol I was in the same boat... there are basically two options: 1) you go to college, be a conformist, get a degree, get a job, pay taxes to the government all your life and go to parties with other conformists and then eventually die just like all the other nobodies who have died in history 2) you tough it out, go freelance, work some blue-collar job to support yourself while you pursue your dreams, uninterrupted by college professors who want to mold you into failures like them, and maybe you fail, or maybe you go on to be an artists who changes the world, but at least you have your dignity I chose option #2 because I'm too individualistic to go to college. It's not so bad--I have my family and my church who support me. Maybe I'll be very successful someday soon. Or maybe I'll never have any money and end up starving to death by next year. I don't care because I'm happy with who I am and what I've achieved, and nobody can take that away from me. The question you really have to ask yourself is, "Am I in it for the money, or is my integrity what's most important to me?"
  6. My son took his love of art (specifically drawing) and is turning it into a career in auto design engineering. You state that you love photography. THere is a very good income in that field. Weddings, children, etc. Might have to be self employed for that one to make real money though. Once you have a really well stocked portfolio of pics, you could also become free lance with different magazines and such.
