Just start event photography. Want to know what rate should be? After finish take pix, burn photos on CDs. Should I just give all pictures (delete bad ones and adjust the color corrections) and leave high resolution on it? Should charge my hour to make some changes on photos? Should I charge for CDs? Give one free then if they want more, then add charge? how much? I am not pro photographer yet but in progress. I use Canon EOS 20D. This yahoo answers is new to me. I am struggling with this. Not sure this add details to reply to persons who gave me answers. My photos are not in website yet. My plans not want be responsbile for prints. When person hire me to take pixs and just give the pixs on CDs and they can print. Are you suggesting me not to do that?

  2. Typically for $250 the client will have you show up at the event and shoot for about three hours. If you have to travel too far, be sure to include expenses in your fee. You then make a CD of all the images of the event at a reduced size (640x480 @72 DPI) so they can choose the images they want to use, but cannot use without paying your fee (usually you put a watermark on them that says "sample" or "proof"). Then you can invoice them for usage (posting on websites or publishing to linked websites) or for prints you supply. Typically the fee for each image on a site is $15 for one month, $25 for a quarter and $50 for a whole year. Editing (sorting) is always done. There should not be any colour correction needed. Be sure to have your copyright notice in the EXIF portion of each file. The easiest way to do this is to use Photoshop Bridge and append the XMP files. This can be batch processed in just a few minutes. Any prepress changes of the files is up to them (CYMK separations and gamma adjustments necessary for the print run). They can do this once you furnish them with the TIFF flles thay have purchased for one time useage. Shoot using RAW and basic JPEG so you can later supply TIFF files if any of the images will be used in a magazine or other publication that has to be of high quality.
  3. I would like to see yoru work before stating price. Also what sort of events. You never give all photos. take lots of photos but have a good eye and use only the best. You can do some editing but only when you can give it just a little more. Never go over the top with editing. You don't want anyone to know your editing. A subtle perfect picture is much better than something with heavy edits (over compensation). Always keep your negatives or originals. Never offer CDS!!! Most wedding photogs will keep originals, negatives and CDs. As the customer they will want to purchase sets for family and friends. That is business for you. plus if they damage their photos you can replace them down the road. You are doing great work for them, so you wouldn't just give them the masters. you own rights to them just like someone doing artistic prints. As far price compare the photographers in your area and compare how you compare in quality. See how they charge, per hour, sets, etc. Other options you should offer are canvas prints and oil painting look a likes. Also do framing and photobooks like mpix. mark-up on everything and purchase wholesale on everything including development.
  4. No, you don't have to reply to answers :) As for what rate to charge, try calling other photographers in your area. I recently talked to Chris Traill - www.christraillphotos.co.nz - and he said there is no money in this kind of photography any more. The only reason he does it is for the love of it. Just thought I'd let you know.
