Where is a good location to get some street photography?

Street photography = taking candid photos of people on the street and/or public places. ie. huge markets / fairs / public events? IN SAN FRANCISCO.....? People, the question was asked in the San Francisco group...I know LA is a hot spot, but I'm not going there. :)

Public Comments

  1. Los Angeles, California.
  2. Yeah, Los Angeles, particularly downtown, where I work. Beautiful, stunning buildings both really old and new. Lots of street people and artists, and vendors. Olvera Street (oldest L.A. street) Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Disney Hall, City Hall, and Union Train Station (gorgeous!) Then to the west there is Farmer's Market and the Grove (outdoor shopping), the market gets a good mix of locals and tourist-y folks. ***UPDATE*** Oh!! In SF!! Go anywhere! Union Square, Golden Gate Park, the Wharf, Giradelli Square, Nob Hill. Nothing but photo op's up there. **2nd UPDATE** Ok, mister. You act like silly people on these forums pay attention to detail! Just because you're from Can-a-duh!! LOL (hee hee!)
  3. For people watching, I like Haight St. You can just take seat or stand around. You'll get a lot of homeless kids, punk rockers and "hip" tourist types going to the boutiques there. Unfortunately, a lot of the populated places are where the tourists roam. The Love Parade is coming up this month. There will be lots of colorful costumes there and plenty of people. The Folsom St. Fair is in October. A lot folks in leather or without clothes will be there. Market St. is a good busy area. The business type people are in the Financial District. There are plenty of places to sit and snap away. Or try South Beach, on a baseball game day. A lot of sports fan, drunken fans and families. The opera house is open for its season. You can catch a lot of folks coming and going, dressed up fancy, around show time. Around 2 a.m., right when the clubs get out, North Beach is jumping with people. I've seen lots of crazy stuff go down there. But the cops will make you and everyone else keep moving. Lastly, you can catch plenty of people on the weekend in Union Square and at Pier 39. Main busy streets are Mission, Market, Van Ness, Embarcadero P.S. Los Angeles is no where even close to SF.
  4. market st. & i like pacific heights & fillmore shopping area. lots of people there. also castro st... i see a lot of photographers taking pictures there.
  5. as someone who actually lives here. and actually rides muni. start with innersunset. the most disered place to live here in san fran. if you get off at 9th and irving (the busiest intersection in all of the city) you'll get plenty to see. its also a few blocks from haight. but there ain't nothing to see on the haight but a bunch of posers. fake wanne be homeless kids who are really rich kids who left their good homes in ohio just to be-different. i'd also try the castro (no i am not gay) castro is a must. if you want the homeless look. try the civic center. soma (south of market) is also a must-if you want pretty people. 4th and powell (if you want tourists mixed in with us locals-trust me when i tell you you'll notice the difference right off the bat) at 4th and powell you can catch the n line (underground that is) to 9th and irving..which reminds me if you get off there at 9th you'll find the de young muesem just a min's walk away (same with the japanese gardens ..basically golden gate park. but aviod the haight if you can. hell hop on bart and take it to berkeley. its worth it and only a few mins by bart (well more like 10 or so)
